Going into their respective Championship games on February 9, 2017 the Sumner Academy Varsity Girls and Boys basketball teams had a chance to make history by being the first teams to go undefeated throughout the season. "That was the goal of both teams when the season started," says Scott Morris Athletic Director and Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Team.
In the girls Championship game, Sumner Academy found themselves down 11-0 to Dayspring Academy at the beginning of the game. Lead by Coach Jay Fitts, the team settled down and cruised to a 43-13 victory and the school's first Tennessee Christian Athletic Association Championship in girls’ basketball. "Words cannot describe how happy I am for the girls and Coach Fitts" says Morris, "he has coached some great teams in the past, but to finally get that championship is truly special".
Meanwhile in the boy’s game, it was much closer; Sumner Academy found themselves down by two at the end of the first, then rallied back to take a 10-point lead at the half. Lancaster Christian Academy cut the lead to one with about 1:35 seconds left in the game. With three seconds left on the clock, Robert Carroll, hit two free throws to give Sumner Academy the 3-point lead and sealed the win with a 27-24 victory, giving the school its first championship in 7 years. "Unbelievable” says Morris, "this was their goal from day one, and to win the championship with this great group of players is a memory that will last forever."
During the trophy presentation, Hannah Heady and Robert Carroll were named MVP's of the tournament.
With their victories, the Sumner Academy boys' team finished the season 15-0, while the girls' team finished 12-0.
