Sumner Academy is now accepting applications for a pre-kindergarten teacher for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year, with an approximate start date of October 28, 2024. This full-time faculty position will work closely with the other pre-kindergarten teacher in a team teaching environment and report to the Director of the Lower School. Qualified candidates will have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Prior teaching experience is required.

Confidence, character, and a love for learning grow daily in Sumner Academy’s Lower School, which consists of grades PK through fourth. In close partnership with families, teachers work to understand, guide, challenge, and nurture their students as the students learn to think creatively and work cooperatively and independently.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions: 

  • Abides by Sumner Academy's Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct
  • Commits to the ideals expressed in Sumner Academy's Mission Statement and Faculty handbook
  • Be on campus from 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM daily
  • Teach fourth-grade students with a teaching partner in a self-contained classroom
  • Participate in field trips, service learning activities, and other grade-level activities
  • Attend to all required grading and conferencing responsibilities
  • Become familiar with Sumner Academy's technology, both hardware and software, and learn to incorporate technology effectively
  • Work closely with other Learning Community teachers
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Education - must have a college degree
  • Prior experience/background - should have at least 2 years of experience in teaching younger students
  • Technical competency - basic/intermediate/advanced understanding and ability to use computers and technology (e.g., Google Documents, Microsoft Windows and Office products, basic office equipment, projectors, mechanical equipment, etc.)
  • Communication - well developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including communicating effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co-workers, parents, alumnae, volunteers, and the public
  • Personal characteristics - adaptability, honesty, self-reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, determination, persistence, problem-solving skills, loyalty, and congeniality are essential
  • Must complete background screening and verification

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate, occasionally works outdoors in varying weather conditions and climate
  • Regularly uses close and distance vision, works at a computer screen for extended periods, ability to observe students from various distances
  • Frequently required to move around the office/classroom or work at a desk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 30/50 lbs. across the campus/classroom/office
  • Sometimes works in an occasionally stressful environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts. Stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
  • Ability to occasionally work flexible hours to support before and after-school or weekend events
