PE Teacher

Sumner Academy is now accepting applications for a Physical Education Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year with an approximate start date of July 21, 2025

The Physical Education Teacher at Sumner Academy is responsible for planning and implementing physical education activities, monitoring students, and evaluating student outcomes for all PK-8th-grade students. The Physical Education program at our school generally emphasizes sports-related skills, movement patterns, games, and age/developmentally appropriate fitness activities. The Physical Education teacher records and maintains student information for reporting purposes on progress reports. This position also requires coaching for AT LEAST one out of three athletic seasons. 

Qualified candidates will have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Prior teaching experience is required.

Confidence, character, and a love for learning grow daily in Sumner Academy’s Lower School, which consists of grades PK through fourth. In close partnership with families, teachers work to understand, guide, challenge, and nurture their students as the students learn to think creatively and work cooperatively and independently.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions: 

  • Abides by Sumner Academy's Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct
  • Commits to the ideals expressed in Sumner Academy's Mission Statement and Faculty Handbook
  • Be on campus from 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM daily
  • Teaches physical education to PK - 8th Grade
  • Prepare/set up the gym before the first day of school.
  • Set up equipment before class.
  • Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to students' intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Prepare and implement lesson plans, providing for appropriate learning experiences for each student.
  • Establish and enforce rules of conduct; supervise students in the gymnasium, or outside on the blacktop or athletic fields.
  • Participate in school-wide behavioral programs, document student behavior, and make necessary referrals.
  • Demonstrate skills being taught; assist students in performing skills.
  • Teach safety rules related to each activity
  • Research and order physical education equipment
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and coordinating Field Day; develop activities; set up for activities
  • Monitor and evaluate student skill levels and outcomes.
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Serve on special committees and fulfill responsibilities of a committee member.
  • Attend planning meetings, team meetings, staff meetings, data meetings, and other meetings of groups according to membership in those groups.
  • Monitor use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attend in-service trainings and workshops
  • Prepare lesson plans and materials for substitute teachers; include class lists and special instructions for students' needs.
  • Become familiar with Sumner Academy's technology, both hardware and software, and learn to incorporate technology effectively
  • Work closely with the other Learning Community teachers
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Education - must have a college degree
  • Prior experience/background - Should have at least two years of experience in teaching students
  • Technical Competency - Basic/Intermediate/Advanced understanding and ability to use computers and technology (e.g. Google Documents, Microsoft Windows and Office products, basic office equipment, projectors, mechanical equipment, etc.)
  • Communication - Well-developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including communicating effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co-workers, parents, alumnae, volunteers, and the public.
  • Personal characteristics - Essential are adaptability, honesty, self-reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, determination, persistence, problem-solving skills, loyalty, and congeniality
  • Must complete background screening and verification

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate, occasionally works outdoors in varying weather conditions and climate
  • Regularly uses close and distance vision, works at a computer screen for extended periods, ability to observe students from various distances
  • Frequently required to move around the office/classroom or work at a desk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 30/50 lbs. across the campus/classroom/office
  • Sometimes works in an occasionally stressful environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts. Stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
  • Ability to occasionally work flexible hours to support before and after-school or weekend events
