Sumner Academy wins Dr. Hovenden Classic

The Sumner Academy Hawks 5/6th grade boy’s basketball team won the 3rd Annual Dr. Hovenden Basketball Classic on Thursday, December 3 by defeating the Western Kentucky Trailblazers 22-19 in the Championship Game. The Hawks were led by Robert Carroll with 13 points and Maxwell Grutter with 5 points.  "I’ve never seen a team play with so much heart," said Head Coach Steven Whitaker. "These guys had to play four straight games to come back to win the tournament, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The Dr. Hovenden Basketball Classic is named in honor of Dr. William E. Hovenden who led the school for twenty-eight years before refocusing on other projects. Dr. Hovenden attended all the tournament games and was involved in the awards ceremony at the close of the tournament.
