About Sumner

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students of Sumner Academy, welcome to our school’s website. We are excited to share with you what makes our school so special.

The greatest strength of any school lies in its faculty.  Great teachers do many things well such as maintain high and rigorous academic standards, teach with empathy and in a nurturing manner, meet students where they are academically, physically, and socially, and create a rich learning environment in which they can thrive.  Our mission is to help discover and cultivate each child’s unique abilities.

Sumner Academy is located on 23 acres in the heart of Gallatin.  The campus houses four buildings:  William E. Hovenden Student Center, William H. Wemyss Library/Media Center, the Lower School building and the Jim and Isa Carroll Field House. The campus also has tennis courts, soccer field, two playgrounds, a garden, and outside classroom space.  To get the true measure of our school, please schedule a campus tour. Tours may be scheduled by contacting Lindsey Stewart at lstewart@sumneracademy.org or calling 615-452-1914.
